For the film, Renato Castellani took inspiration from the novel by Giuseppe Berto, dall'Einaudi published in 1951.
In the novel, the robber called Michele Rende and crime is actually the true story of the bandit Francis Acciardi Aprigliano of Silas, who was, at the time when Berto wrote, still alive and was serving a life sentence in prison Procida, who is accused of killing his wife, Miliella.
Miliella was his real wife, one evening (the second version of the defense), he was cold and he gave her his coat, and so was killed instead of him by a treacherous assassin.
