Nel 1596 fu attaccata e distrutta dal pirata Sinàn Capudàn Pascià Cigala (che corrisponde semplicemente al cristiano rinnegato Scipione Cicala).

Appartenuta ai Ruffo di Montalto, ai Riario, ai Borgia e agli Spinelli, adesso è un importante centro agricolo con attività industriali.
